xx How Greg met Katy: Short Story
« Thread started on: Mar 8th, 2009, 1:54pm »

Date: November 19th, 2006
Location: 22nd Street Yard, San Diego California
Time: 4:26 P.M.

The sun was beginning to set as Greg walked along the RDC’s just before they were going to be moved to the station. Just then, Jeff strode up pulling off his gloves. As he put them in his back pocket he said, “There all ready to go Greg. Hey what’s the matter?” Greg was staring into space looking depressed again. Jeff put his arm on his shoulder. “Listen man, you’ll find some body nice eventually, ok?” Greg just stared on; Jeff continued “Come on no time for dozing off, it’s time to go.” Greg said nothing as he climbed up into the cab. His fireman, Al, was already in the cab. “Sup Greg? You look tired; you want me to drive up to the station?” Greg quietly said “No it’s fine…” He sat down and shut his eyes.

It had been one hell of a week; a near miss with a truck at a grade crossing in Irvine, and Jeff’s birthday party. “It’s was no time for sleeping” Greg thought “The railroad never sleeps.” After getting clearance from the yardmaster at 4:40, Greg slowly throttled up as the train swayed though the yards many switches. After passing the trolley yard, the train passed over Broadway and into the station. Once stopped, the car attendants began the boarding. The sun was really starting to set now. Greg looked at his watch. “4:47… only 20 minutes till departure, more than enough time to go take a quick walk.”, Greg thought. He got up and walked out of the cab. Al yelled “Were you goin?” “I’m just going to stretch my legs. Ill be back in time.” Said Greg in a confident tone.

“Have a nice trip home.” “I will. You to.” Katy walked away from her friend’s car; she had been nice enough to take her to the station. As she walked up to the station she gazed at the colorful sunset. “Mother nature is the best artist.” She walked up near the train still starring at the sunset. The oranges and reds of the sunset made a dazzling reflection on the stainless steel of the Budd cars.

It was just about time to depart, and Greg was completing his final walk around of his train. He saw a young girl with a rather large suitcase staring at the sun, almost completely beyond the horizon. Greg walked up to her, “Miss, if this is your train you might be wanting to get on.” After a few seconds she spoke, “That’s too bad ill miss the sunset.” Greg quickly replied “You’ll get a great view of it on the train, trust me. Now, let me help you with your bag.” She handed the bag to Greg. It was quite heavy. “Thanks for the help. By the way my name’s Katy.” As Greg lifted the heavy suitcase up into the train he said “Nice to meet you Katy. I got a question for you, how would you like to ride up front, the views a lot better up there than back on the cushions.” She thought for a second then said “I’d love to” Greg walked up into the cab. “Hey Al your going to have to sit in the back buddy.” Al looked confused. “Why?” Greg rolled his eyes. “Uh business reasons; just do it.” Al reluctantly got up and walked to the rear cab of the two car train. Greg walked back to get Katy. “You can come on up now.” She followed him into the cab. Greg pointed at the seat “You can sit there. Also your bag is on the luggage racks back in the car so you won’t have to worry about it.”

It was 5:17, time to go. The conductor gave the all clear signal and we were off. Greg slowly pushed the throttle into ‘P1’. The train slowly eased out of the station. Greg throttled up to ‘P3’ while crossing Ash Street. Katy, looking at the sun, said “Can I get my bag? I’d like to sketch this so I can paint it later.” Greg said “Sure go ahead.” As she walked out of the cab Greg thought “This should be interesting.”
